Rays Game Recap: Opening Day 2011

Date: April 1, 2011

v. Baltimore Orioles

Attendance: 34,078

Pitching Matchup:

TB: David Price (0-0) 0.00 ERA

BAL: Jeremy Guthrie (0-0) 0.00 ERA

Summary:

The Rays were hoping for a much different outcome tonight. With Cy Young candidate David Price on the bump, the Rays hoped to get the season started off with a win. Not so much!

After a Vladimir Guererro single in the second, Price was able to strike out the side. This proved to be the highlight of the night for Price. Price went seven innings and struck out seven, unfortunately in a losing effort.

Nick Markakis put the O’s on the board in the third, singling in JJ Hardy. Markakis finished the day with two RBIs, as did Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts. Guthrie became the first Orioles pitcher since Rick Sutcliffe in 1992, to go eight or more scoreless innings on Opening Day.

The newly acquired duo of Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon combined to go 0-for-8, with two strikeouts. The lone offensive bright-spot for the Rays, Ben Zobrist teased the fans still in attendance with a solo homerun in the ninth.

Next Up:

James Shields will get the start on Saturday. The Orioles’ Brian Matusz (strained rib-cage) was placed on the DL earlier in the day so he will not start for Baltimore. Chris Tillman will get the call Saturday instead. The Orioles promoted Zach Britton from Triple-A Norfolk.
