Fellow Fansided blog Seedlings to Stars recently took a great in-depth look at Rays reliever Dane De La Rosa. Few people look at De La Rosa as anything but a September callup from last year and probably a career minor leaguer. At 28 he is pretty old for a guy getting his first crack at the Big Leagues. But according to this in-depth look he certainly has a chance to become much more than that.
The Rays bullpen will need some help this offseason. Juan Cruz, a big part of the bullpen this season, is departing due to free agency. They also have some question marks, like Cesar Ramos and JP Howell. The Rays could clearly use a great middle reliever, and Dane De La Rosa will get his chance to enter the mix. He has a great cut fastball and a great breaking ball that could get hitters out. Add that to his high swinging strike rate and tons of ground balls and you have a good reliever.
De La Rosa will clearly need to prove himself this Spring Training to break into the bullpen, but he could be a great internal option going forward for the Rays. He could fill a middle relief roll that is a bit in limbo beyond Brandon Gomes. De La Rosa is an older rookie but could certainly have some success for the Rays in the future.
