In a move Monday that wasn’t necessarily a shock, the Rays decided to pick up the option on closer Kyle Farnsworths’s contract and he will return next year to lead the back end of the bullpen. He appeared in 63 games and came through with 25 saves which was a career high. Is Farnsworth a Rivera or a Valverde? No, he isn’t, but he is solid, and to go with his career high in saves he also posted a career best 2.18 ERA. Farnsworth at least gives the Rays a proven performer to anchor the pen as I’m sure a lot of young players will be getting their chance in 2012.
