Spring Game 11: Twins 2, Rays 1
The result wasn’t great, but yesterday’s game had a lot of positives. James Shields, the newly named Opening Day starter, made his second spring start yesterday, going 4 scoreless innings, allowing only 3 hits. Kyle Farnsworth followed Shields, allowing 1 earned on 2 hits. Cesar Ramos, the only other Major Leaguer to pitch, pitched a scoreless inning.
On offense, Desmond Jennings was the star from the leadoff spot. Jennings was 2 for 3 with a RBI and a stolen base. Matt Joyce and Jeff Keppinger were the only other regulars to get hits, each going 1 for 2.
Spring Game 12: Rays at Orioles
Matt Moore is ready to make his return in this one, after being out much of the spring with an injury. Moore will follow David Price, who will most likely start the second game of the season. Price should get a similar workload to James Shields, who got four innings yesterday. I would expect Moore to get only one or two, considering he is just starting his spring.
Rays News and Notes
- Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times looks at Matt Moore as he prepares for his first ever start in big league spring training.
- The Rays made their first round of cuts yesterday, with Alex Cobb, Alex Torres, and Chris Archer among the names sent to minor league camp. None of those three would have made the team, but I would have expected them to stick around longer.
- Topkin reports on some of the players expected to get their heads shaved with Joe Maddon on Thursday.
