Rays Notes: Rodney Coming Back, Scott's Option Declined, AFL Rising Stars Game

The Rays’ had a few more decisions to make on Wednesday and decided to keep fireballing right-hander Fernando Rodney by picking up his 2.5 million dollar option while declining the 6 million option on DH Luke Scott. Rodney’s option was a no-brainer for the Rays while Scott might be an option for the Rays next season, but his salary was too high from the option after he posted a 101 OPS+ in 2012, and if they bring him back it will be at a lower monetary value. It’s nice to know that the back of the bullpen is all settled for the Rays with Rodney as closer, but the Rays will need to find a DH with Scott becoming a free agent.

A big part of the Rays’ offseason plans will be who the Rays decide to trade, especially among their starting pitchers, and Andrew Friedman said that keeping both David Price and James Shields is definitely a possibility.

Even trading a starting pitcher is not a certainty.

The bottom line with Andrew Friedman is that he’s not going to trade his starting pitchers unless he feel that he can get reasonable value in return. Friedman could have traded B.J. Upton or Shields a while ago but decided that their contribution to the team was more valuable than any offers he received for them. With the right offer on the table, Friedman would deal anyone on the Rays. But that offer has not come around yet and Friedman is willing to wait as long as it takes. There’s nothing wrong with having too much pitching.

The rosters for the Arizona Fall League Rising Stars Game were announced Wednesday and two Rays prospects will participate: shortstop Hak-Ju Lee and LHP C.J. Riefenhauser. Lee has posted a .288/.393/.327 line so far this fall with great defense while Riefenhauser has not allowed an earned run in 10.2 innings, striking out 10 while walking 3. Congrats to both on their impressive performances so far this fall and hopefully they can keep going strong.
