The Winter Leagues had a light slate of games Monday night, with only two games in the Dominican League and one in the Venezuelan League. Meanwhile, the Mexican League had the night off. Former Ray Rhyne Hughes appeared for the Gigantes del Cibao against the Estrellas de Oriente, while Erold Andrus and Henry Wrigley appeared in the Leones del Caracas v. Navegantes del Magallanes matchup.
Dominican Winter League: Gigantes del Cibao 6, Estrellas de Oriente 1
Rhyne Hughes kicked off the scoring in the scoring for Gigantes in the top of the second, as he led off with a solo home run to center. Gigantes added three more runs in the top of the third, highlighted by RBI singles from Juan Segura and Robinzon Diaz, with the third run coming in courtesy of a bases loaded wild pitch with two out. Estrellas would get a run back in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a run on a two out RBI single by Michael Martinez. Consecutive walks loaded the bases as Estrellas threatened to get closer, but Daniel Robinson grounded out to third to end the threat. Gigantes added runs in the seventh and ninth en route to the 6-1 victory.
Hughes had a solid day at the plate, going 1-3 with the home run, while drawing two walks. He did, however, make an error in the bottom of the third, yet the runner was left on base.
Venezuelan Winter League: Leones del Caracas 7, Navegantes del Magallanes5
Caracas jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, as Henry Wrigley had a two out RBI double, and came around to score on a base hit by Carlos Rivero. However, that lead was short lived, as Magallanes came back in the bottom of the second. The consecutive singles loaded the bases with no outs. Following an RBI force out and a hit batsman to reload the bases, Francisco Cervelli hit a two run single. A walk reloaded the bases; and, after a force out at home, a bases loaded walk forced in the fourth run of the inning. Caracas came back in the top of the fourth, loading the bases with no one out. After a strikeout and a force out at the plate, Darren Ford hit a grand slam to center, putting caracas back on top 6-4. Jose Altuve had an RBI single for Magallanes in the bottom of the frame to trim the lead to 6-5, but Caracas tacked on an insurance run in the top of the eighth on an RBI groundout with the bases loaded, providing the final margin in the 7-5 victory.
Wrigley played left field in the game, a position he played in only three times last year, and 63 times in his seven year minor league career. For the game, Wrigley was 2-4 with 2 doubles, an RBI, and 2 runs scored. He also committed an error in the four run second. Erold Andrus had an appearance as a pinch hitter, flying out in his only at bat in the bottom of the eighth inning.
