The Undercards: Jon Weber’s Struggles Continue in MPL Playoffs

Jon Weber had an excellent regular season in the Mexican Pacific League, posting a .325 batting average with 35 RBIs. For a while, he was a mainstay in the headlines in this segment. However, he has struggled in the playoffs, as his batting average fell to .213. If Mexicali is going to have a chance, they need Weber to produce like he did during the regular season.

Mexican Pacific League Championship: Yaquis de Obregon 6, Aguilas de Mexicali 5

Already up 2-0 in the series, it appeared as though Obregon was well on their way to taking a commanding 3-0 lead over Mexicali for the MPL Championship, as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead through the bottom of the fifth inning. However, Mexicali stormed back, tying the game in the top of the sixth with a five run outburst, highlighted by a three run home run by Ruben Rivera. The game remained tied into the bottom of the ninth, when Jose Figueroa led off the inning with a single. After a force out, Geronimo Gil committed a passed ball, putting a runner on third. Following two intentional walks to load the bases, Oscar Villarreal hit Jesse Gutierrez with a pitch, forcing in the winning run to leave Obregon one win away from hoisting the trophy. Wes Bankston was 1-4 with an RBI double and a run scored, while Weber was 0-2 with 2 walks for Mexicali in the loss. Iker Franco was 1-3 with an RBI and a walk for Obregon.

Venezuelan Winter League Championship: Cardenales de Lara 4, Navegantes del Magallanes 2

Lara sped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the first, as Luis Jimenez had an RBI single, and another run scored on a double play. After putting single runs up in the fourth and fifth innings, Lara held a 4-0 lead heading into the top of the ninth. Magallanes fought back, as Elvis Andrus and Pablo Sandoval hit back to back solo home runs with one out to cut the lead in half. However, Victor Moreno settled down, and retired the final two batters as Lara hung on for the 4-2 victory, taking a 2-1 lead in the best of seven series. Jean Machi recorded the final two outs for Magallanes, giving up a hit and recording a strikeout.
