Four Rays home runs and a 7 inning 4 hit 2 run performance by Chris Archer will do it every time as the Rays beat the Yankees 7-2 in the first game of a 3 game series at the Trop.
The game started out with a modest Yankee threat in the first inning as Gardner opened the first with a walk, stole second, went to 3rd on a fly out and scored on a base hit.
The Rays went right to work in the second as Joyce and Johnson singled and Jose Lobaton hit a 3 run home run off the right field foul pole. The Rays were just getting started. Matt Joyce closed out the Yankees in the top of the first with a great catch in right field and doubled up Gardner to end the top of the third and in the bottom of the frame, Longoria and Joyce hit solo homers to put the Rays up by four.
In the bottom of the fourth, newly acquired David DeJesus pounded out a double and scored on a base hit by the red hot Jose Lobaton. The hit parade continued as Zobrist hit a solo homer in the fifth. Meanwhile, Archer was cruising as his two and four seamer plus his slider kept the Yankees off balance all night.
The Yankees made a try in sixth as the ever pesky Gardner hit a triple and scored on a ground out. It was too little too late as the Yankees only other threat was stopped by a sensation catch by DeJesus is left field with two men on in the seventh.
Jamie Wright and a rare relief apperance by Roberto Hernandez closed out the last two innings. A nice start to an important series.
