Leslie Anderson had a strong year at Durham and has overcome a recent slump to keep it going in the Venezuelan Winter League. The 31 year old Cuban hasn’t exactly panned out the way the Rays had hoped but he could still could have an impact on the big league roster someday if he continues to hit.
Mexican Pacific League: Mayos de Navojoa 10, Venados de Mazatlan 2
Yurendell de Caster, who signed with the Devil Rays in ’96, led the way for Navojoa by going 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored. Jon Weber went 0 for 4 with a walk and run scored. On the losing side, Henry Mateo went 1 for 4 with a run scored for Mazatlan.
Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League: Leones De Ponce 6, Cangrejeros de Santurce 5 (11 Innings)
Former Rays farmhand James Houser got the start for Santurce and lasted just 3.2 innings, allowing 4 runs on 8 hits. He also struck out a hitter and walked one. John Rodriguez was the DH for Santurce and went 1 for 4 with a run scored. A few other players were a little more exciting. Reds speedster Billy Hamilton had an insane game for Santurce, going 3 for 6 with 4 stolen bases, an outfield assist, and the go-ahead RBI in the 11th before Ponce came back. Astros prospect Jonathan Singleton went 3 for 5 to raise his fall average to .313.
Venezuelan Winter League: Tigres de Aragua 15, Aguilas del Zulia 6
Hector Gimenez helped Aragua rout Zulia by going 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Zulia starting catcher Juan Apodaca went 0 for 4. Apodaca was aquired by the Rays last April for additional catching depth but had trouble staying healthy and was limited to 29 games. His teammate Yorman Mayora only recorded one out while walking 3, giving up 2 hits and allowing 3 runs.
Caribes de Anzoategui 8, Bravos de Margariata 3
Leslie Anderson has been slumping of late, but he continued getting back on track by going 1 for 4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Even after his struggles, he is still sporting a .345 average this fall and will be headed back to Durham hoping to finally get his chance. Jon Meloan made his winter league debut by recording an out for Anzoategui.
Cardenales de Lara 7, Navegantes del Magallanes 1
In a game featuring two prospects that could be involved in a potential David Price trade, it was a very one-sided game. Jesus Flores went 1 for 3 with a solo home run, which turned out to be the only run Magallanes would score. Erik Hamren allowed a home run in the lone inning he would pitch. Romulo Sanchez picked up the win for Lara 1.2 scoreless innings. Joc Pederson and Roghned Odor combined to go 0 for 8 with 5 strikeouts between them.
Leones del Caracas 6, Tiburones de La Guaira 4
Daniel Mayora went 1 for 5 with a double and Danny Dorn went 1 for 3 with a double of his own to help Caracas secure a victory against La Guaira. 17 different pitchers were used in the game, which concluded on a Jesus Guzman walk-off home run in the bottom the 10th inning.
