It was a scary moment you never want to see in the spring, but luckily nobody was seriously injured. Desmond Jennings and BJ Upton had a little outfield mix-up yesterday, leading to a nasty collision between the Rays two star outfielders. Both are OK, with Jennings expected not to miss time, and Upton only to be out a few days.

Jeremy Hellickson was on the mound for the Rays, going three innings and allowing four earned and two homers. He didn’t do as bad as the stats show, as the homers killed him. From there, Josh Lueke, Fernando Rodney, Joel Peralta, JP Howell, Jake McGee, and Brandon Gomes each went scoreless innings.

It’s time for another installment of Around the Twitterverse! Those cruel Rays players couldn’t let David Price‘s towel attack slide without some clever swipes at him. Elliot Johnson got in on the act:

Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes; I appreciate it very much.Anyone know where to find neck-friendly towels? The ones we have hurt!

— Elliot Johnson (@ElliotJohnson9) March 10, 2012

Former Ray Dirk Hayhurst was just surprised to hear how it happened:

Price hurt from a vicious towel attack. Hmmm, I suspected a towel whip to the no-no’s (been there) shocked to learn it was self inflicted.

— Dirk Hayhurst (@TheGarfoose) March 9, 2012

Good news for us is that David took the assault in stride:

Players and coaches taking low blows at me…I got something for all this though… lockerz.com/s/190977994

Then he started dishing out the blows himself. Not to fellow players, but to beat writer Marc Topkin:

Nice word usage nerd RT @TBTimes_Rays: In today’s @TB_Times, yes, #Rays @DAVIDprice14 really did hurt himself toweling off too vigorously

Moving away from Towel-Gate and onto March Madness. King David Price was proud to see Vanderbilt beat Kentucky for the SEC Title:

yessssssssssss!!! Who ya with?? That’s right!!! Go Vanderbilt!!!! hahaha I’m pummpppeedddd

Congrats fellas!!!!
BJ Upton wants to help Rays fans in their bracket pools:

Check out my NCAA Bracket – if you want to win your pool I got you – atmlb.com/zPja8u

I will leave you with a couple tweets from Elliot Johnson. First, he tells us of the Cut for a Cure fundraiser going on Thursday:

Cut for the cure on Thursday. We have 25 guys lined up to shave their heads to benefit the pediatric cancer foundation#fortunefavorsthebald

— Elliot Johnson (@ElliotJohnson9) March 12, 2012

Then he talks about walk-off wins. I’m sure we will all agree with his sentiments:

Walk off wins are fun no matter if it’s pre-season, regular season, post-season, duck season, or wabbit season.

— Elliot Johnson (@ElliotJohnson9) March 11, 2012

That’s all I have for you in this week’s Around the Twitterverse. Check in next week for some more tweets from your favorite Rays players.

Spring Game 1 Recap: Rays at Twins

Even with the Rays 7-3 loss in the spring opener, the Rays showed promise. The runs didn’t come until later in the game for the pitchers and the Rays starting offense turned it on in the beginning. BJ Upton had a big game, going 2 for 2 with a double and a triple. Matt Joyce went 1 for 2 with a 2-run homer. Jose Lobaton and Elliot Johnson were the other two starters to get a hit.

Chris Gimenez continues to impress, going 1 for 2 with a double after replacing Jose Molina. Gimenez could be working his way into the backup catcher spot if he continues to show offensive potential. His flexibility to play corner infield and outfield spots as well as defending well at catcher is something Joe Maddon could look at to make his final decision.

David Price had a good showing in his first spring appearance, throwing a perfect frame in the first. Chris Archer backed him up with a scoreless second. Dane De La Rosa struck out the side in the fourth, allowing one hit. Alex Colome struggled a bit in the fifth, allowing 3 hits and 1 run. He did impress Joe Maddon, though, hitting 98 with his fastball.

Spring Game 2: Twins at Rays

Pitchers: Rays- Jeremy Hellickson, Fernando Rodney, Joel Peralta, J.P.
If you are heading to Port Charlotte for game two of this home and home with the Twins, you will see a bunch of pitchers that could make the Opening Day roster. We will get our first look at Jeremy Hellickson as he looks to back-up his Rookie of the Year campaign. We will also get our first look at three offseason acquisitions, Fernando Rodney, Josh Lueke, and Burke Badenhop.

Rays News and Notes

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times talks to new ESPN analyst Terry Francona, who has some praise for the Rays now that he can actually say nice things about them.

Topkin also takes a look at Joel Peralta’s decision to lie about his age when coming out of the Dominican Republic as a prospect. Peralta said he was 16 when he was actually 20. The age difference came out when he was with the Angels. Now Peralta is 35 and is entering his second season with the Rays.

The Bradenton Herald writes about Carlos Pena‘s return to the Rays. Pena will certainly be the answer to the Rays first base void they had entering the offseason, and he will fill the role well if he can provide the power and clubhouse presence we have all come to love.
