The Rays’ offense, which had been sputtering of late, finally came alive but the Rays’ still fell to the Yankees 7-6 in 10 innings.

Jeremy Hellickson took the hill today for the Rays and wound up delivering only mixed results. While Hellickson did manage to pitch seven innings, his stat line was not spectacular at all giving up four runs, all earned, on eight hits with two walks against only one strikeout. He allowed home runs to Kevin Youkilis and Travis Hafner to account for 3 of the 4 runs he allowed. His numbers were entirely unimpressive, but as the regular season draws closer it’s always good to see the starting pitcher go fairly deep into the game. The latter was what Joe Madddon dwelled upon following the game, loving how Hellickson got into the “mindset” of going deeper into games, something critical as he replaces perennial 200-inning man James Shields in the Rays’ rotation.

Down 3-1 in the top of the 4th is where the Rays offense began to get going. Back to back singles by Shelley Duncan and then Yunel Escobar put men at first and third with no one out to start the inning, and although Escobar later got caught stealing, the Rays offense was able to rally. An error scored Duncan before Desmond Jennings came through with a big 2-run double, also taking third on the throw, and two batters later that loomed large as Ben Zobrist brought him home on an infield single to give the Rays a 5-3 lead.

Hellickson departed with the Rays holding a 5-4 advantage but Veteran right-hander Jamie Wright, still looking at making the team, took the ball in the eighth inning and struggled, allowing Youkilis’ second home run of the game, a 2-run shot, to give the Yankees a 6-5 lead. But the Rays were able to respond in the top of the 9th. There were two outs and a runner on 3rd when about the least likely candidate on the Rays for a clutch hit stepped up to the plate: Jake Hager, one of the Rays’ top prospects but also a player who finished last season at just Low-A. Digging in his for his first-ever at-bat in major league spring training, Hager came up huge, drilling a game-tying double to centerfield to tie the game at 6. After Wright rebounded from the Youkilis homer by forcing three groundouts in a 1-2-3 ninth, the game headed into extra innings.

The Rays had themselves quite a day, but it was spoiled in the bottom of the 10th when Josh Lueke gave up a walk-off home run to Yankees outfield prospect Ronnier Mustelier to give the Yankees a 7-6 win. But while the Rays would always want to win, it’s still spring training and the individual performances are what matter most at this point. Hellickson impressed by going 7 innings and Wright did finish strong, but the real headliners were the bats, principally Ben Zobrist, who went an incredible 4 for 5, Desmond Jennings, who went 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles, Matthew Joyce, who also collected 2 hits in 4 at-bats, and obviously Hager, who came out of nowhere to deliver his huge double. Also having an encouraging effort was Kelly Johnson, who is hitting just .136 this spring but was great in this one, going 1 for 2 with 2 walks as the Rays hope to get him going with the season rapidly approaching. Up next for the 14-14 Rays are the Pittsburgh Pirates, with Matt Moore taking on Kyle McPherson in a 1:05 PM matchup at the Rays’ spring home in Port Charlotte.

Right-hander Jamey Wright has been through a lot. The 38 year old is a 17-year veteran in the major leagues, transitioning from a starter to a reliever and making major league appearances for nine different major league teams. But even after everything he has seen, Wright considered the chance to join the Rays a special opportunity.

“Their history here, there’s been several veteran guys come in and contribute pretty big time,” Wright said. “For me, it’s an opportunity to come in and I’m not worried about making the team or doing anything, I worried about getting myself ready to go for another season. And that’s all I think about right now. If I throw the ball the way I know how, the way I’m capable of, there will be an opportunity here or somewhere else.”

Wright understands that there’s no guarantees for him as spring training begins. But at the same time, the Rays have shown that they’re not afraid to rely on veteran relievers and have even helped several of them revitalize their careers. Wright could be even more valuable because of his versatility as a pitcher based on his previous history as a starter.

“I’ve had to come in and eat up two or three innings and I’ve come in and throw one pitch, get a ground ball and get two outs. Down [in the bullpen], unless you’re Fernando Rodney or one of the guys who knows when they are pitching, it’s kind of an attitude of be ready for anything. It’s fun and games down there for the first few innings, but then once that certain inning hits, it’s time to lock it in and get ready to go and not be caught off guard.

Unlike other relievers the Rays have signed, Wright isn’t a reclamation project- he’s coming off a 3.72 ERA and an outstanding 67.3% groundball rate in 67.2 innings pitched for the Dodgers in 2012- and he was just waiting for another team to desire his services. The Rays answered the call, and if things go as expected, Wright will be a major part of the Rays’ bullpen in a middle relief role this season.

He’s not with the Rays anymore, but it’s been very exciting for Rays fans to hear about Scott Kazmir making a big to return to the major leagues with the Cleveland Indians. Kazmir talked to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN about his journey back.

“I spent so much time asking other people for answers. I knew if I was going to turn it around, it had to be me. I feel like I’m in a good place now. When things aren’t going your way and you don’t have a clue how to get it back, it’s frustrating. There’s anxiety coming to the field. Now my mind is clear. I feel good to be with an affiliated organization. It’s nice to be here.’’

It was almost beyond comprehension how Kazmir had established himself for years as the best starter the Devil Rays had ever seen by far and then before we knew it, he was out of baseball. It’s taken an unbelievable amount of mental toughness and motivation (he has made over $30MM in his career, after all) for Kazmir to find his way back, and best of luck to him continuing his comeback as a member of the Indians.

From a dominant lefty of the Rays’ past to a dominant lefty of the Rays’ future, Teddy Mitrosilis of ESPN wrote about (Insider-only) Rays left-hander Matt Moore as a candidate to break out in 2013. Mitrosilis discussed how Moore was pretty enigmatic in his rookie season in the major leagues but still showed plenty of positive signs, and 2013 could very well be the season that everything comes together for him. Armed with a mid-90′s fastball that generating to highest whiff rate of any fastball thrown by a starting pitcher in the major leagues and two other potential plus pitches in his curveball and changeup, Moore has what it takes to be an ace in the major leagues and soon. If that happens in 2013, pairing him with David Price at the top of the Rays’ rotation will be a deadly combination for opposing teams.

Rays fans got quite a surprise on Wednesday night when Fernando Rodney told the Dominican newspaper El Día that his agent was working with the Rays the finishing touches on a contract extension that would keep Rodney in a Rays uniform through 2015. However, just minutes after writing up the story, Topkin talked to the Rays, who responded with not a confirmation, not a “no comment”, but utter confusion- the Rays and Rodney weren’t even in extension talks. What is going on? Topkin suggested that either there was some miscommunication between Rodney and his agent, Dan Lozano, or that he was misquoted. Rodney wasn’t misquoted, he said pretty clearly in Spanish that “Everything is ready. Today we’re going to announce an extension with the Rays for two years.” So what in the world is happening? Hate to say it, but your first thought has to be a Manti Te’o situation, right? Does Dan Lozano even exist? (He does- included among his clients are players like Albert Pujols and Joey Votto.) Is Rodney lying? (Why would he?) Did anybody die? (Apparently not.) What’s Deadspin saying? (Nothing.) Is El Día even a real website? Included in the article is this sentence: “salario por 2,5 millones de dólares, que es muy bajo”- which translates to “a 2.5 million dollar salary, which is very low.” Would any real journalist say that? (Well, I’m not technically a real journalist, so I’m not qualified to answer.) Does anyone have any information? At this point, there are a whole lot more questions than answers, and hopefully things will become more clear over the next few days.

In non-bizarre news, Matt Eddy of Baseball America mentioned in the comment section of a recent article that two players the Rays signed as minor league free agents this offseason, right-handers Jamie Wright and Juan Oviedo, are Title XX-B free agents, which means that they will receive a $100,000 bonus if they start the season in the minors and have a June 1st opt-out date if they’re still in the minors at that time. Oviedo is hurt, having undergone Tommy John Surgery last year that will sideline him until August, so this is probably irrelevant for him, but Wright is going to be interesting. Wright is a sinkerballing reliever with the ability to slide right into the role vacated by the trade of Burke Badenhop, and his title XX-B status may give an inside track for the final spot in the Rays bullpen. Wright put up a 3.72 ERA in 66 appearances for the Dodgers in 2012, managing an outstanding 67.3% groundball rate, so him landing a spot in the Rays’ pen would be far from a bad thing.

Talked about in the Baseball America article itself was that the Arizona Diamondbacks have signed former Rays minor leaguer Chris Nowak. We covered Nowak quite a bit in our Winter Ball Recaps here at RCG as he put up huge numbers, managing a.311/.442/.513 line with 6 home runs and a 22-21 strikeout to walk ratio for the Navegantes de Magallanes, who went onto win the Venezuelan Winter League championship. Nowak, who the Rays’ drafted back in the 19th round of the 2004 MLB Draft, played 2012 in unaffiliated leagues after 8 years in the Rays and Brewers organizations, and it’s great to see him back in a major league organization continuing to pursue his dream of playing in the major leagues.
