Entering the 2008 season, the Rays made several key moves to set up their remarkable run to the World Series. Two of those moves, though, might have been a case of addition by subtraction. Delmon Young, the Rays’ first overall pick back in 2003 fresh off a second place finish in the 2007 Rookie of the Year voting, was a player that no one possibly thought was on the trade market, but suddenly he was gone, traded to the Minnesota Twins along with Brendan Harris and Jason Pridie for Jason Bartlett, Matt Garza, and Eddie Morlan. Then Elijah Dukes, the promising prospect who had hit just .190 as a rookie in 2007 but did slam 10 home runs, was shipped out as well, traded to the Washington Nationals for Glenn Gibson. Replacing Young and Dukes were lesser talents but better clubhouse presences like Gabe Gross and Eric Hinske, and between Gross, Hinske, Evan Longoria, Cliff Floyd, Troy Percival, James Shields and others, the Rays created an extremely positive clubhouse atmosphere that was pivotal in their rise from a perennial bottom dweller all the way to the World Series. Was character the only factor for the 2008 Rays? Absolutely not- it was the most talented team the Rays had put together by a longshot and that was the principal reason the Rays were so unbelievably better than they had ever been before. That being said, the team dynamic was still a significant factor in the Rays’ improvement, and after they had seen such amazing results with it that season, you would think that it would be something that the Rays would attempt to continue. Instead, the Rays have proceeded to do the exact opposite.

How could a team focused on developing leadership in the clubhouse acquire players like Matt Bush or Josh Lueke with such troubled pasts? You can say that those are minor league players whose maturation off the field was going to be as key to their development as their improvement on the field, but we’re not talking just any immature young player but a player with a history of drunken incidents (culminating with him going to jail after a hit-and-run incident) and a player who was accused of rape and pled it down to a lesser charge, still spending 30 days in prison. Even moving beyond Bush and Lueke, why did they sign Manny Ramirez? And even after Ramirez bombed out so spectacularly, the Rays acquired another enigmatic personality this offseason, Yunel Escobar! It’s gotten to the point where you see media outlets say that the Rays don’t care about players’ clubhouse presences when evaluating whether to acquire them. What happened? Why have the Rays reversed course so severely?

The biggest reason that the Rays could not continue to set a premium on character is simply money. The Rays can’t be too picky regarding which players they’re willing to acquire because few talented players fall into their price range and if they focus too much on clubhouse presence, an already thin market for players they have a chance at would only dwindle. In an ideal world, the Rays would sign as many high-character guys as they can, but it’s simply impossible within their budgetary contraints. However, at the same time, the Rays have realized that players with attitude problems are an underexposed inefficiency.

We don’t live in a world where players are evaluated surely on their level of performance and upside to improve. A player’s character is something many teams value as high as anything else, with the Arizona Diamondbacks trading Justin Upton and Trevor Bauer being recent prominent examples. Players with histories of attitude problems carry an additional element of risk to go along with the risks that accompany every baseball player. But if you’re willing to take on that risk, the reward can be an impact major league player at a fraction of what he would be worth based on talent alone. Real or perceived character issues drop players’ values significantly in the eyes of teams and bring talented players down to contract levels that teams like the Rays can afford. And when the Rays see an opportunity to sign an undervalued player, they tend to pounce.

Character can work in both directions. Players who are known as great “clubhouse guys” can manage to stay in baseball long after their primes- how else would Mark DeRosa get a guaranteed contract this offseason? But at the same time, those players are not necessarily as good for a team on the field as they are in clubhouse. The Rays signed several character guys in 2008, but Troy Percival didn’t have much left as a big league player and neither did Cliff Floyd. Carlos Pena may have been another leader in the Rays’ clubhouse, but Rays fans watched him fall apart as well this past season. You don’t play someone millions of dollars to play baseball simply because he’s good guy. They need to perform, and performance has to come first. For many teams, there are exceptions- legendary players entering the twilights of their careers get retained by their teams for just about however long they want to play, and even lesser stars receive a great deal of leeway from their teams even after their performance drops off. But simply put, the Rays can’t afford that. They need to find a way to put a contending ballclub on the field season after season and they don’t have time to be sentimental. It’s sad to see them go back on their ideals and sign players we wouldn’t want our kids to emulate. But the most important thing for the Rays is winning, and lessening the importance of character in their evaluations is something that helps them do exactly that.

On the same day where the Rays concluded negotiations with a pitcher on a 2013 contract, one of their former pitchers put the finishing touches on the plea deal that will put him in jail for next three years. Two promising pitchers, two futures that could not be any more different.

After we heard last week about the Rays being close to signing Roberto Hernandez, the pitcher formerly known as Fausto Carmona, Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times reported yesterday about the final terms of the deal. The Rays’ contract with Hernandez is worth 3.25 million dollars for one year with Hernandez able to earn an additional 1.85 million. 1.25 million dollars of those incentives are based on innings pitched while the other $600,000 is based on relief relief appearances, so the Rays are unsure which role Hernandez will play next season. Smith later talked to Andrew Friedman about the signing.

“We feel like this is a one of those risk-reward stories that makes a lot of sense for us,” Friedman said. ”Upside is really compelling.”

“This guy has got really good stuff,” Friedman said. ”The two-seamer, which he gets a lot of ground balls, slider, changeup. We feel like he has the repertoire to get out righthanded and left-handed hitters.”

It was surprising just how much money the Rays gave Hernandez (more on that later today), but they clearly see him as a pitcher with considerable promise who could play a big role for their team next season. Hernandez saw his career completely sidetracked after it discovered that he was in the United States under a false identity, but the Rays still know that his stuff is electric and that with the right adjustments he could be even better in 2012 than he was in the past. The Rays are looking forward to seeing what Hernandez can do for them next season.

A year ago, Matt Bush went into spring training knowing that with a good minor league season he would finish the year in the major leagues. The Rays had given him a third chance after attitude and alcohol problems had run him out of the Instead, on March 23rd he made a mistake that has completely ruined his life. He borrowed his teammates car while he was drunk and while his license was suspended, and he crashed into a 72 year old motorcyclist, critically injuring him, and then fled the scene. It’s impossible to have sympathy for Bush after everything he has done. All we can do is ask how in the world a baseball player with so much talent let his life get away from him like this. On Tuesday, Bush’s sentence was officially set in stone. Bush accepted a plea deal that will put him behind bars for the next three and a half years. Bush has so little confidence in his ability to stay sober that he turned down a deal that would have put him behind bars for one less year but would have added 7 years of probation after his sentence. It’s just sad how far he has fallen. The family of the victim has also fired a 5 million dollar lawsuit against Bush and current Rays outfielder Brandon Guyer, whose car Bush was driving (Guyer didn’t know his license was suspended), and the family also blamed the Rays for the entire ordeal.

“I think as far as the Rays go, they brought Matt Bush here, so I think the family kind of feels like they’re the ones that brought him to town,” Moore said. “He wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the Rays, so I think the family is a little upset with the Rays, knowing Matt Bush’s history, all the DUIs, why would they bring him to this area? So that is another thing the family has a question about. Why would you scout out a person who has a history like that? so, that’s a whole other deal.”

Matt Bush did something terrible. But you’re blaming the Rays? You’re blaming them for giving him a second chance? Should people who committed a crime never get re-hired because you’re scared of what they might do? That’s great logic. You hope that people can change, and sometimes they really do. Unfortunately, this was not one of those cases. It’s absolutely terrible what happened to the victim and everything the family has gone through, and it’s depressing how Bush looked like he had finally turned his life and career around only for him to do something worse than ever before and bring his entire life crashing down.

In other Rays news, Jim Hickey talked to the Rays’ official site about the state of the Rays bullpen and how there are things still up in the air but he’s confident that the group will be able to come through.

“We always talk about in order to be good, you have to have three or four guys that you trust at the end of the game at the higher leveraged innings, and we certainly have that,” Hickey said. “So I’m pretty comfortable where we’re at right now.”

A former member of the Rays’ bullpen, J.P. Howell, is someone the Rays might consider re-signing, but Bill Ladson of MLB.com mentioned in a chat that Howell has five different suitors also looking to sign him, and that makes it seem unlikely that he’ll be back with the Rays next season.

Finally, former professional scout Bernie Pleskoff wrote in a column for the Rays’ official site about shortstop prospect Hak-Ju Lee, praising his defense and also describing his offense as “projectable” with more power that Lee has yet to tap into. Pleskoff also discussed how the Rays’ signing of Yunel Escobar allows them to take their time with Lee and give him the time he needs to develop. Lee has the potential to develop into the first real franchise shortstop the Rays have ever had, and the Rays hope that with time he’ll be able to live up to his potential and be an integral part of future Rays teams.

It was terrible a few months ago to hear what now ex-Rays player Matt Bush did, driving drunk under a suspended license, seriously injuring a 72 year old man in the process. Justice is finally being served as Bush has accepted a plea deal that will keep him behind bars for at least three years. Bush is also being sued by the family of the man for 5 million dollars in damages. Continuing ramifications for the Rays are that outfielder Brandon Guyer, who loaned his car to Bush not knowing his license was suspended, is also involved in the suit. This whole situation is just really depressing and it’s unbelievable that Bush did something like that.
