It has been an awfully tough stretch for the Rays of late, but it’s nice to see David Price and Fernando Rodney recognized for their efforts as the Rays’ representatives in the MLB All-Star Game in Kansas City this season. Price has gone 11-4 with a 2.92 ERA, an 8.3 K/9, a 3.0 BB/9, and a 0.8 HR/9 in 16 starts and 104.2 IP this season and his 11 wins tie him for the AL lead with Matt Harrison. Rodney, meanwhile, has been everything the Rays could have hoped for from their closer, going 2-1 with a 1.04 ERA, a 9.1 K/9, a 1.3 BB/9, a 0.3 HR/9, and 22 saves in 36 appearances spanning 34.2 IP. Congrats to David and Fernando for getting in, and hopefully they can keep their strong performances going and represent the Rays well in Kansas City.

Ex-Red Sox manager and ESPN analyst Terry Francona sent out a couple of interesting Rays-related tweets today.

Sources tell me that the #Cubs are very close to completing a trade that would send SS Starlin Castro to the #Rays

— Terry Francona (@FranconaESPN) July 2, 2012

Sources tell me that the #Rays are very close to completing a trade that would send OF Desmond Jennings to the #LosAngeles#Dodgers

— Terry Francona (@FranconaESPN) July 2, 2012

Will either of those actually happen? Who knows. The strange thing about the first trade scenario is that the Rays already acquired one topflight Cubs shortstop prospect in Hak-Ju Lee before 2011 and now would be acquiring a second one. I guess it’s feasible, but it’s definitely not about to happen nearly a month before the trade deadline. The second trade scenario doesn’t make any sense at all because 1) who would the Rays replace Jennigns with this season? Rich Thompson? Brandon Allen? Luke Scott and his injury-prone self playing the outfield every day? Are you kidding me? and 2) B.J. Upton is leaving as a free agent following the season, so look at this 2013 outfield depth chart.

Right field: Ben Zobrist, Matthew Joyce, Brandon Guyer

Centerfield: Rich Thompson, Brandon Guyer

Left Field: Matt Joyce, Luke Scott, Rich Thompson

Maybe we would see Tim Beckham, Ty Morrison, Mikie Mahtook, and Derek Dietrich enter that picture as well, but only Beckham is even at Triple-A right now! No, thank you.

And finally, the Rays have made a little noise on the international signing front, re-signing catcher Erick Maria to a $300,000 contract as Baseball America reported. The Rays signed Maria in 2011 when he was reportedly 16 years old before it was discovered that he is now 18. Maria, 6’2″, 200 shows nice defensive promise and some solid upside with his right-handed bat. The Rays could use all the solid catching prospects they can get at this point.
