Rays News and Notes: Yankees Get Busy, Rays Next?

The Yankees have had a very busy week this week, completing a blockbuster deal to get Michael Pineda for Jesus Montero. They weren’t done there, as they also signed Hiroki Kuroda on Friday. Now the Yankees are rumored to be in contact with both Carlos Pena and Johnny Damon. Their interest in Pena is more of note to the Rays, considering Pena could be the Rays best option for first base.

These new rumors, however, could be completely false, since Jon Heyman is reporting the Yankees only have $1-2 million to spend on a DH. Even still, the Yankees had a huge week and are still on the market for a DH since Montero would’ve seen most of the time there.

New wild card spot – great news for Rays

Major League Baseball made a couple of big moves today, adding a new wild card spot to each league and moving the Astros to the American League to make two 15 team leagues. Rays fans should be rejoicing over the announcement of the addition of a wild card team. That means that instead of fighting with the Red Sox down the stretch like they did this year, they will have an easier path to the playoffs.
