Rays Notes: Scott Kazmir, Joel Peralta, “Throwbacks”

Wednesday was a crazy day in terms of news in the Rays organization. News was real, news was fake, news was premature. Let’s see what did/didn’t/might happen.

Ken Rosenthal tweeted that ex-Rays ace Scott Kazmir has signed with the Sugarland Skeeters in his hometown of Houston, Texas. The Skeeters themselves tweeted back that Kazmir has not yet signed with the team. We’ll have to see what happens with that. Kazmir, the first real ace in Rays history, last pitched in 2011 in the Angels organization, appearing in 1 major league game and 5 minor league games.

Joel Peralta may be suspended by Major League Baseball. That has not happened yet as Peralta tossed 0.2 scoreless innings for the Rays on Wednesday night, although he did have to borrow Jeremy Hellickson‘s glove. The Nationals did not check Peralta’s new mitt.

And finally, get ready to pretend to turn back the clock as the Rays unveiled their “Throwback 1979 uniforms” for their special Turn Back the Clock June 30th game versus the Tigers. Thanks to Jonathan Gantt in the Rays communications department, here’s first a picture of the throwbacks that the Rays and Tigers will wear for that game and then Joe Maddon wearing the Rays’ throwback.

That game will be a ton of fun.
