Rays Notes: Joyce, Lobaton, Rickard, Dukes, Minors Injuries

By Robbie Knopf

What’s so great about injuries in baseball is that they’re something we can all relate to- but I don’t think any of us want to. A couple of pieces of good injury news for the Rays as Matt Joyce is on track to come back after two rehab games at Triple-A Durham.

Hideki Matsui is also apparently OK after his embarrassing error on Tuesday night where he also pulled his hamstring in the process. But there’s always a trade-off, in this case a couple of minor league injuries to relatively notable prospects. Per RaysProspects, Mikie Mahtook left the Charlotte game on Monday night after crashing into the outfield wall and we’ll have to see what his status is moving forward. Also, Todd Glaesmann was hit by a pitch on Monday night (Micheal Compton), but apparently it’s not broken. That’s nice.

Other unfortunate news centers around ex-Ray Elijah Dukes, who was arrested for driving with a suspended license (Steve Carney). Sad to see everything that has happened to him since he was a promising Rays prospect.

The Rays have signed their 9th round pick, speedy outfielder Joey Rickard from the NCAA champion Arizona Wildcats. 1st rounder Richie Shaffer remains their only pick in the top rounds that has not yet signed and the Rays have signed 34 of 40 picks overall. The signing deadline for draft picks is July 13th.

And to finish on a great note, Jose Lobaton got married on Monday at home plate at Tropicana Field. Big congratulations are in order for Jose and his new wife Nina.

And by the way, everyone at RCG would like to wish all our readers a happy July 4th.
