On Monday, the Rays got a huge lift from an unexpected source. Catcher Chris Gimenez had two big RBI, including what turned out to be the deciding run in the 8th, to lead the Rays to a 4-3 victory. So who’s the next unexpected hero who will rise up for the Rays? Here’s the Rays’ lineup.
Looking at that lineup, no September call-ups in there this game. But could Carlos Pena rediscover some of the magic that we’ve seen from him in past years with the Rays, even for one night? Could Ryan Roberts, who stole a base ahead of scoring the winning run on Monday, further cement himself as a key component of this team with a big day? Could Jose Molina improbably get a big hit? And how about Alex Cobb? Jeff Niemann has been hurt just about the entire year and Cobb has filled in admirably, going 8-8 with a 4.39 ERA, a 6.7 K/9, a 2.4 BB/9, and a 0.7 HR/9 in 18 starts and 106.2 IP. His ERA drops to 4.01 if you take out his 8 inning, 8-run complete game against the Royals on June 25th, and 3.38 if you also take out his disaster start versus the Angels in which the Rays came back from an 8-0 deficit to win. Cobb may very well be the best 5th starter in baseball. Can Cobb continue his stellar season with a win versus the Yankees on Tuesday night?
