Winter Ball Recap: Playoffs In Full Swing

The Winter League playoffs have now begun and each team is striving to reach the Caribbean World Series. It should create some great baseball to cap off the winter. It also is a sign that spring is near and spring training is creeping up on everyone. Perhaps a player will be able to turn a head or two in these playoffs to earn an invite to Spring Training or possibly ensure a roster spot. We can only wait and see.

Dominican Winter League: Aguilas Cibaenas 3, Gigantes del Cibao 2

Cardinals’ prospect Carlos Martinez pitched 5 solid innings to help lead Aguilas to a win. He only allowed 1 run on 5 hits and struck out 6. Joey Terdoslavich went 1 for 3 with a run scored and Hector Luna went 1 for 4 with an RBI to help out the cause. Evan MacLane did all he could to keep Gigantes in the game with 6 innings of 1 run ball on the mound but couldn’t get any help from the offense.

 Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League: Leones de Ponce 6, Gigantes de Carolina 2

Giancarlo Alvarado went 6 strong innings to lead Leones to the victory. He allowed only 1 run on 3 hits. Reymond Fuentes went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored, an RBI and a triple in the game to lead the offense in the winning effort. Gigantes only got 5 hits but 2 of them came from Ruben Gotay. Jesus Feliciano went 0 for 4 in the losing effort as well.

Venezuelan Winter League: Aguilas del Zulia 2, Navegantes del Magallanes 0

A strong performance from the Aguilas pitching staff helped lead the way to a victory. 4 pitchers combined for the shutout with Wilfredo Boscan pitching 5 of them and earning the win. Navegantes was able to muster 8 hits but couldn’t push across any runs. Robinson Chirinos went 0 for 3 but did throw out a runner attempting to steal a base. Ezequiel Carrera went 3 for 4 for Magallanes.
