Rays Winter Leagues Recap: Matt Fields Hits 2 Home Runs

By Robbie Knopf

Nothing like a breakout game to start wiping away some struggles. That held true for Kes Carter and Matt Fields on Monday night as they led their respective teams to victory.

Arizona Fall League: Peoria Javelinas 10, Surprise Saguaros 4

Kes Carter has had the roughest time of the five Tampa Bay Rays position player prospects in the AFL, but you wouldn’t know that from this game. Carter went 3 for 5 with a homer, a triple, 5 RBI, and 2 runs scored. He began his day with a solo homer, but he was only getting started as he delivered a pair of two-run hits before the game was through. Carter continues to have his moments as a prospect, and the Rays have to be hoping that he will begin to deliver them more often.

Patrick Leonard went 0 for 4 with a walk and a run scored in the win for Peoria, while Matt Lollis tossed a perfect relief inning with a strikeout.

Dominican Winter League: Estrellas de Oriente 8, Gigantes del Cibao 6

Matt Fields hit 28 home runs in the Pacific Coast League in 2014, so he could not have expected to hit just 1 home run in his first 14 games in the Dominican Winter League. This game, though, provided results more in line with what the Estrellas were expecting when they signed him. Fields went 2 for 4 with 2 homers and 3 RBI, and the homers were huge in the game. The first gave Oriente an insurance run in what had been a 5-4 game while the second ended up providing the winning margin.
