The danger of heading to Winter Ball after a big regular season is that you could play poorly and enter the next season with significantly less confidence. Even worse, of course, you could get hurt. In any event, though, Johnny Field is only building on his 2014 Rays Minor League Player of the Year Award as he plays in the Australian Baseball League, and that’s exciting to see.
Australian Baseball League: Adelaide Bite 14, Brisbane Bandits 6
For seemingly the first time since we started covering the ABL, the Bandits actually lost a game. Johhny Field at least made sure that they went out with a bang, capping his 2-for-5 day and a 4-run ninth inning overall with a 2-run homer.
On the ABL season, he has a .277/.379/.468 line with 3 doubles, 7 RBI, and 5 stolen base. He even has a strong 12-9 strikeout to walk ratio. The only bizarre thing is that he doesn’t yet have a double. In any event, Field has done a great job keeping his.300/.376/.488 line between Low-A and High-A up almost entirely.

Dominican Winter League: Estrellas de Oriente 9, Leones del Escogido 4
Jordan Pacheco had a nice game for the Leones in their loss, going 2 for 5 with 2 RBI. Enny Romero did not at all, allowing 3 runs without recording an out, allowing 2 hits and a hit batsman. Romero now has just a 10.57 ERA in 9 appearances for Escogido as his DWL struggles are reaching a crazy extent. Right when we wanted to be optimistic about his 2014 peripherals at Triple-A…
Mexican Pacific League: Tomateros de Culiacán 1, Aguilas de Mexicali 0
Same format as the previous game, but quite different results. Mike Jacobs went 0 for 2 with a hit-by-pitch as the Aguilas got 3-hit, but Edgar Gomez had another huge relief appearance. 2 perfect innings with a strikeout has Gomez’s ERA at 1.35 after 20 MPL innings. He hasn’t allowed a run in his last 11 frames. While Romero has unceasingly struggled, Gomez has made a name for himself.
Venezuelan Winter League: Tiburones de La Guaira 4, Caribes de Anzoátegui 3
The former Rays minor leaguers on La Guaira had nice games, with Cesar Suarez going 1 for 2 with 2 walks, a double, and a run scored and Miguel Rojas going 1 for 3 with a double and a stolen base. That steal came against Jesus Flores, who did go 1 for 4 to extend his hitting streak to 8 games. Rojas has a .286/.355/.357 line for the Tiburones as he hopes to add hitting to his tremendous infield defense.
Leones del Caracas 12, Tigres de Aragua 11
I do a pretty job making sure I keep myself on point and only talk about the Rays prospects, but Alex Gonzalez in this game has to be an exception. The veteran infielder went 5 for 6 with a homer and 8 RBI to win Caracas this game! That’s pretty crazy.
Heading back to the players we usually discuss, Hector Gimenez went 2 for 4 with a double, a walk, an RBI, and 2 runs scored for Aragua while Henry Rodriguez went 2 for 5 with 3 RBI and a run scored. Rodriguez has cooled off, but he still finds himself with a .307/.370/.412 line on the VWL season. Albert Suarez also appeared in relief for the Leones, although he allowed 2 runs on 4 hits while recording just 2 outs.
