Opening Day: Rays vs. Blue Jays game notes

By Dan Slaubaugh

The Tampa Bay Rays will open their 2016 season at home against the defending American League East champion Toronto Blue Jays.

Congrats fans. You’ve made it.

April 3rd, 2016. Rays Opening Day.

For fans of all teams, Opening Day will always have the feel of a fresh start. All teams are 0-0. Every team is at the same advantage (record-wise).

For the Rays, they are set to face the Toronto Blue Jays at 4:05pm ET on ESPN2.

Chris Archer will take the mound for Tampa Bay. Marcus Stroman will take the mound for Toronto.

Archer: 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 0 IP’s.

Stroman: 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 0 IP’s.

This is the lineup Kevin Cash is opting with vs. Stroman.

The Blue Jays have not yet released their Opening Day lineup, but it will undoubtedly be a potent line-up. However, the Rays have a history of taking the Jays to the woodshed at Tropicana Field. With Chris Archer on the bump, who was 3-2 against Toronto last season but held the Blue Jays to .197/.265/.328 slash-line over six starts, that stands to continue on Opening Day.

Meanwhile, Toronto will counter with Marcus Stroman. The young right-hander missed much of 2015 after tearing a ligament in his knee. However, he made a strong return down the stretch, going 6-3 with a 1.67 ERA, a 3.54 FIP, and a 6.0 K/9 ratio over four September starts.

Six teams will open their season today, with the leftover 24 opening on Monday.

It should be a fun day in St. Petersburg. Tropicana Field should be rocking as the Rays have sold out their 11th consecutive home opener.

Thanks for reading. Enjoy the game. Go Rays.
