You would be hard pressed to find a Tampa Bay Rays fan who does not have the team pegged for the second wild card spot.
It seems like the only true competition for the second wild card spot is the Oakland A’s. The first spot will clearly go to the Boston Red Sox or New York Yankees depending on who loses the AL East title.
The Minnesota Twins have made late offseason moves, and play in a just dreadful division that can hand them a ton of wins pushing them into playoff contention as well.
If you have read my bold predictions, you know I consider the Tampa Bay Rays the best of these three, and a lock for a wild card spot.
But It will be a lot tougher than even I make it seem.
The Orioles are the only truly dreadful team in the AL East, because eventually the Toronto Blue Jays will call up their pair of stud prospects to make that team more well rounded, and competitive. While the Blue Jays will not even be remotely good, they will be trying, and not a pushover. I can not say the same for the Royals, Tigers, White Sox (though the Sox could be in that Blue Jay vein if their prospects pan out), Rangers, and Mariners.
The Rays are the only team that will see two juggernauts at the top of their division, two of the best teams in baseball that they have to play consistently.
Confidence level that the Tampa Bay Rays will miss the playoffs: 2/10. Baseball is random, Am I a little too confident in this Rays squad? Probably, but I still think they are just simply better than the A’s, and Twins.
