Potential Rays trade target: Austin Romine, Detroit Tigers
Tampa lost Travis D’Arnaud in the offseason and Mike Zunino has been decent as the everyday catcher. However, he isn’t the best option available. Bringing in a player like Austin Romine could be a big under-the-radar trade for the Rays.
Romine was a Yankee his entire career before signing with Detroit so he has familiarity with pitchers in the division and playing in the Trop. It’s not flashy but could be a solid addition. He is currently on a one-year contract and has proven to be an everyday starting catcher. He is solid defensively, as he has allowed just one passed ball in 147 innings behind the plate. This could help guys like Blake Snell, who is currently tied for the MLB lead in that category.
Romine fits what the Rays do, focus on putting the ball in play. Romine is quietly having a good season at the plate as well as he has 19 hits in his first 18 games played. He doesn’t have the plate discipline as he only has one walk on the season but he can more than hold his own both at and behind the dish.
