The 2024 MLB season was filled with many highs and many, many lows (especially if you ask Rays fans). As we reel in a new calendar year, let's recall the few highs for the Rays that were highlighted in the MLB.com top 100 plays of the year.
#12 - Former Rays center fielder Jose Siri robs Gunnar Henderson at Camden Yards
Coming in at #12 in the top 100 plays of the 2024 season was a home run robbery from none other than, Jose Siri. Rays fans will harp on his offensive inconsistency and sporadic baserunning, but the athlete was simply a defensive wizard. His outfield talents are only compared by Rays former Gold Glover, Kevin Kiermaier.
His defensive skill set was on full throttle in this remarkable play against the Baltimore Orioles. On September 7th, the 2023 Rookie of the Year crushed a drive to one of the deepest dimensions of the field in right center. However, Siri tracked it down perfectly and snagged right before it landed over the wall for a three-run home run. While the implications of this September contest were virtually meaningless for the Rays, the improbable catch allowed Tampa Bay to hold on to a 2-0 lead going into the 5th inning.
The Rays would go on to win the game 7-1, giving Ryan Pepiot his 8th win and the Rays their 70th victory. Siri's defensive web gem would wind up being a difference maker as the momentum never turned in Baltimore's favor.
#22 - Ryan Pepiot throws an immaculate inning against the Red Sox at Tropicana Field
The No. 22 top play of the 2024 season according to MLB.com was Ryan Pepiot's immaculate inning on September 18th. An immaculate inning consists of nine pitches, nine strikes, and three consecutive strikeouts. The feat is extremely rare due to mere probability. Since 2020, only 16 different pitchers have accomplished this, as Pepiot was the last pitcher to put one on display.
Despite the difficulty of the task, Rays fans aren't surprised. The former LA Dodger walked only 48 opposing hitters in his 130 innings of work last season. We're excited to see what's in store for this consistent starting pitcher in 2025. Happy New Year from us at Rays Colored Glasses and here's to an abundance of incredible plays next season.
