When you ponder the fan favorites from the Rays history, names like Evan Longoria and Ben Zobrist instantly arise for their commitment and contribution to some incredible seasons. However, there is one forgotten fan-favorite that made his impact in the clubhouse through unbelievable comradery, teamwork, and a bit of humor. Are we surprised that he's going to come back to his beloved organization?
Brett Phillips rejoins Rays as Brand Engagement Executive
As a Seminole, FL native, Brett Phillips grew up less than an hour from Tropicana Field and was undoubtedly a huge Rays fan. Therefore, it was a dream come true when the talented outfielder was traded to the Rays in the middle of the 2020 season.
Phillips began his career in the Astros system and got dealt to the Brewers before making his MLB debut. A few years later, the hard-working athlete finally played in his first major league season. He didn't disappoint as he produced a .276 AVG in 37 contests, while playing impressive defense in center field.
The following season saw some flaws from Phillips' bat and led to a trade involving the Brewers and Royals. Struggles continued in Kansas City as he produced an atrocious .178 AVG in three seasons with the Royals. Regardless, there was a light at the end of the tunnel as he made his way home during the shortened 2020 campaign.
The Rays only employed Brett Phillips for a total of 17 games in 2020, and he displayed sub-par statistics in the small sample size. Either way, they decided to keep him on the roster for their unbelievable playoff run as the Florida native had a huge impact on one of the biggest games in franchise history.
Phillips received three at-bats in the 2020 playoffs as most of his time was consumed by cheering on his teammates and created signs for the record-breaking performance of Randy Arozarena. However, one of those at-bats will be remembered forever by Rays' fans.
In the 9th inning of a Game 4 of the World Series, Brett Phillips stepped to the plate as the most unlikely pinch hitter. Everyone was obviously holding their breath with low expectations of him pulling off a miracle. However, the lefty smacked a base hit off of Kenley Jansen into right center field. After a few errors and some good luck, Arozarena slid into home as the winning run, keeping the Rays' hopes of a first World Series championship intact.
As you know, the Dodgers defeated the Rays in six games, but that moment from the unlikely hero will never die. And now, the Rays are adding him back to the mix in a much different position. Phillips will be in charge of engaging fans at the stadium which couldn't be more perfect due to his renowned fame amongst fans. This hiring is about as exciting as any of the offseason signings for the Rays and will certainly make a positive impact on the season.
