The Tampa Bay Rays have made an impact late-night addition, promoting top prospect Junior Caminero between games of their current series with the Houston Astros.

The announcement came via Tampa Bay Times reporter Marc Topkin, injecting hope into Rays fans everywhere who've been watching Caminero's progress from afar.

Caminero, a consensus top-10 prospect in the game of baseball, has played in Triple-A with the Durham Bulls this season following a rehab assignment within the Florida Complex League. Over the course of the full year, he is batting .274 and has an OBP of .337. Both of these are low points compared to his previous three seasons.

However, the bright spot in his 2024 play has been the extra-base hits, as his 10 doubles and 16 home runs this season have been pretty on par for what he has done during his minor-league career. This particular skill should be helpful, as the Rays rank among the bottom 10 teams in the league in total extra base hits.

Despite a midseason playoff push, the team is still struggling to score runs, as their team average with runners in scoring position is a painful .218. That ranks second to last in the MLB just ahead of the Chicago White Sox. Monday's loss to the Astros exposed them further against a red-hot team, and the infusion of Caminero could help them remain energized for the stretch run.

For a Rays team that is currently 5.5 games back from a Wild Card spot, this Caminero call up could not have come at a better time. They are 4-6 to start the month of August, with an even harder slate of opponents coming up on the horizon, and his bat has the potential to provide spark to areas that have hindered the Rays' season.

Regardless, it is a big deal to see the No. 2 overall prospect enter the league for baseball fans everywhere, as a lot of signs point to Caminero having lots of success at the major league level.
