Tampa Bay Rays may have pulled their bullpen magic again with Edwin Uceta

The Tampa Bay Rays have found a big time bullpen arm in Edwin Uceta. His contributions have been huge this season and he has a case to be the best reliever in St. Pete.

Edwin Uceta has made his way around Major League Baseball since 2020. He has played for four teams in four seasons since that point, and that includes the Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks, New York Mets, and now Tampa Bay Rays in 2024.

While playing for the three previous teams, Uceta played in a combined 25 games. He has played in 13 this season already in Tampa Bay. It seems the opportunity that has been presented to him in St. Petersburg has been exactly what the 26-year-old right-hander needed.

The 2024 season has been Uceta's best of his career. He has a 1.19 ERA in 22.2 innings of work and a WHIP of 0.62. He has also struck out 27 batters during that stretch and has allowed just three earned runs total all season. He also has not given up a walk in four appearances, with the last one coming on July 25 against Toronto. The walk and strikeout rates Uceta has posted are strikingly good.

Opposing teams also have not been able to find ways to hit the ball on Uceta this season. He has given up an opposing average of .145, by far the best mark of his career.

The Rays do not let Uceta eat a ton of innings; he's emerged as a trusted high-leverage guy in a surprisingly short amount of time. Clearly, that usage is working, and it is sending him on a good career path, as he seeks to produce more and become an integral part of this Rays' bullpen in the future.

Uceta is just another example of how good the Tampa Bay pitching factory is, as it has turned him into a well-seasoned reliever after multiple years highlighted by quickly moving around to many different teams.
