Despite a worrisome 9th inning, the Rays notched their fourth straight victory against the White Sox. This win improved their record to 9-7 and gave them sole possession of first place in the AL East. How did the lowly Rays accomplish this, and the most important question is: can they stay the course?
After a rough 2-5 start to the season, it was looking like another season that would result in a failed attempt at a postseason pursuit. However, the surging Rays have gone 7-2 since then, highlighted by a series sweep of the rival Yankees. That series was ultimately what allowed Tampa Bay to gain ground on their divisional opponents so quickly.
The rest of the field has been rather disappointing. We've already discussed the Yankees' rapid descent, but the other clubs have also played below expectations. The Red Sox are likely the most notable example. Boston is a shocking 6-11 through their first 17 contests and they've dropped to 3.5 games back of first place in the division. Their offense with the absence of Alex Bregman and Rafael Devers has mustered only four runs per game, while their pitching has surprisingly allowed nearly five runs per contest.
Meanwhile, the 2025 American League champion Blue Jays are already struggled heavily with injuries. Injuries to key pitchers like Trey Yesavage, Jose Berrios, and Shane Bieber has limited them greatly. Combine that with the loss of consistent slugger Bo Bichette to free agency this past offseason and it's no wonder they're off to a mediocre 7-9 start.
The Orioles are starting to heat up, but their offense has still played well below expectations. Their 72 runs this season is only four more than the last place Red Sox and it has resulted in a 9-8 record. Baltimore is currently even with the Yankees for second place in the division as the Rays were able to sneak into first due to losses from both the Orioles and Yankees. The D-Backs barely defeated the Orioles, while the Angels routed the Yankees in a 7-1 victory. With the Rays' "comfortable" 8-5 win, they now claim first place all by themselves, but there's still 146 games remaining.
