The pitching injuries are beginning to pile up for the Rays at exactly the wrong time. Joe Boyle and Ryan Pepiot are currently on the IL for the foreseeable future, and the bullpen is now starting to suffer with injuries of their own. Two key relievers will be sidelined for a while as the Rays approach an important stretch of games.
Mason Englert joins the IL with right forearm tightness
The Rays added Englert to their bullpen after acquiring him from the Tigers prior to the 2025 season. A successful spring that saw him punch out eight hitters in six innings only solidified his placement on the roster. The 26-year-old righty had a solid campaign a season ago as he produced a career-high 0.2 WAR in 44.2 innings out of the pen.
His addition to the 2026 was another last-minute decision, but Englert proved himself well with a perfect 0.00 ERA in 8.1 innings this past spring training. Unfortunately, the regular season has had opposite results. In 12.2 innings of work, the young hurler has given 10 earned runs and four home runs.
Nonetheless, his injury is a huge blow to the Rays' bullpen as the front office will need to find another pitcher that can eat 2-3 innings every now and then. As of right now, Englert is on the 15-day injured list as more of a precautionary move, but it could be lengthened if anything worsens in that time frame.
To fill his role, 25-year-old rookie Trevor Martin made his MLB debut. In 2.1 innings against the Reds last night, Martin gave up one run on two hits and struck out two opposing hitters. This was a very promising start to his career as the Reds have proved that they are one of the best teams in the National League.
Edwin Uceta suffers a right subscapularis strain during Triple-A rehab game
This one hurts. The Dominican relief pitcher was already in a rehab game for his shoulder impingement that was diagnosed during spring training. Now, he'll be away from the big-league clubhouse even longer after his most recent subscapularis injury.
Heading into spring camp, the Rays were expecting their 28-year-old hurler to be their closer. In the meantime, former Orioles relief pitcher Bryan Baker has filled that role nicely, but the Rays are certainly missing Uceta's elusive pitches and impeccable command.
