The Rays' Opening Day roster is starting to become assembled for the first game against the Cardinals on Thursday. Most moves are going to be obvious, especially with the starting rotation and infield. However, this roster decision surprised quite a few fans due to the player optioned in accordance with it. There are multiple reasons as to why this particular move was made, but it's still going to perturb some die-hard Rays' fans.

Ryan Vilade added to the Rays' roster, Richie Palacios optioned to Triple-A

The Rays acquired Ryan Vilade through a deal with the Reds this offseason. Cincinnati only required cash from Tampa Bay for this trade, and it appears that it may have been a steal. The Rays added Vilade to their Opening Day roster as a vital utility option off the bench.

A season ago, the scrappy Richie Palacios claimed this role, but multiple injuries suppressed his 2025 campaign. This concern, along with a few other factors, have forced the 28-year-old to return to the minor leagues to start the 2026 season. His 109-game tenure in a Rays' uniform has spanned two seasons and resulted in a .239 AVG and 24 RBIs. These numbers unfortunately didn't lock in his roster spot for the 2026 season.

With two utility spots available, Ben Williamson, Richie Palacios, and Ryan Vilade were the likely candidates. With Vilade in and Palacios out, Williamson is almost certainly a lock for the second bench role. The Rays acquired the former Mariners' rookie in a 3-team trade that also included the St. Louis Cardinals.

Ryan Vilade was drafted by the Rockies in the second round of the 2017 draft. He's had some impressive minor league seasons which have resulted in a .280 AVG and over 400 RBIs. However, the 27-year-old Texas native has never shown production at the major league level. In three MLB seasons, he's appeared in 28 games and hit a depressing .141 with one home run. Apparently, a .220 spring training batting average was enough for the Rays to take Vilade on to start the 2026 season.

A few other important factors brought about this decision. First of all, Vilade is right-handed which is a desperate need in the lefty-heavy starting lineup. Cedric Mullins, Jonathan Aranda, Gavin Lux, Jake Fraley, and Chandler Simpson all hit from the left side, so Vilade was a reliable right-handed option. Also, the 6'1 utility man is completely out of minor league options, so he would've had to have been sent to waivers if the Rays decided against his addition to the roster. Now, if he doesn't pan out, they can still call up Palacios for the same role.
