The Rays have had their share of difficult series as they've dropped five of their first eight, but they have somehow avoided the dreaded sweep all season. This is an important factor thing to note as sweeps can lead to extended losing streaks like the Mets' infamous 12-game losing streak and the Phillies' nine losses in a row. 10 teams have avoided being swept this season and every one of them except the Angels have a winning record and are in a good position for a run at the postseason.

The Rays' first series of the season gave them the greatest likelihood of being swept as they lost the first two games and were on the ropes for game three. However, Tampa Bay hitters scored early and often in the rubber match. Led by Yandy Diaz's 5-hit game, the Rays scored 11 runs without using the long ball. They utilized five doubles and 17 total hits to defeat the Cardinals 11-7 and salvage the series.

The Rays' recent series against the Pirates in Pittsburgh was another "sweep scare" as the Pirates were in control all series. After a long, drawn-out rain delay, the Rays were able to avoid a return of Cy Young winner Paul Skenes and took full advantage. After going down 4-0 through 4 innings, the Rays scored five runs immediately following the delay. The win wouldn't come that easy though as it took a heroic blast from Cedric Mullins to complete an 8-7 victory. The Pirates comfortably won game three, but the sweep was already out of the question.

Finally, the Rays' recent home series against the Cincinnati Reds was looking like it would result in the first sweep of the season. The Reds dominated in the first two contests, outscoring the Rays 18-7 with the help of six homers. However, Nick Martinez saved the day with an 8-inning gem in the third game of the series. He gave up only one run on five hits to add to his impressive resume as a Rays' starter. The bats did just enough to win 6-1 and avoid the sweep.

The other nine clubs that have avoided the sweep so far in 2026 are the Reds, Braves, Cubs, Guardians, Angels, Dodgers, Pirates, Padres, and Cardinals. Despite their 8-game winning streak, the Cubs appear to be the most likely candidate to lose this streak as they will face the Dodgers in Los Angeles for a 3-game set.
