UPDATE, 1:22 PM EST: First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM EST, according to the Yankees. Let's see if this one remains uninterrupted.

The Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees are set to play a finale matchup in the Bronx on Sunday, but Mother Nature may have other plans; the tarp is out, as of 12:25 PM EST, and a rain delay - which has long felt inevitable - now seems to be underway.

After being shut out by Max Fried (again) in the opener, the Rays rallied against the Yankees in the eighth inning Saturday and captured a hard-fought victory. Chandler Simpson led an all-out assault on the base paths, and Pete Fairbanks held on in a clean ninth. Simpson will return to Sunday's starting lineup, if the game ever gets underway.

The Rays would really like to have Sunday as an opportunity to steal a road series from MLB's largest villain and even the score after Easter weekend's mess in Tampa.

Alas, the tarp is on the field, and the game is officially in question.

Yankees vs. Rays appears headed for rain delay as weather forecast worsens in the Bronx

The forecast for Sunday in the Bronx includes 100% chance of rain through the afternoon, followed by additional showers in the evening. The rain started about an hour before the prescribed 1:35 PM EST first pitch.

Will this game be canceled? The Rays' next series in the Bronx is scheduled for July 28-31, with a mutual off day between the two parties the very next day. Would MLB dare lose a travel day, though? Would they cram a fifth game into a four-game series? Regardless of the solution, eliminating this game from the schedule would cause a major headache, the likes of which MLB would very much like to avoid.
