If the Ben Williamson walk-off single in Game 4 of the World Series is all the Tampa Bay Rays muster, maybe it’ll still be enough.
Well, it wouldn’t be enough for the team. Their goal is to win the World Series. This is in the context of giving the Tampa Bay Area community one more boost.
The unexpected season gets one last unexpected win thanks to an unexpected bat. After all, teams who fall behind 0-3 in the World Series rarely even force a Game 5. It’s about just a rare that a team staves off elimination with a walk-off.
It’s at least one more exciting moment. Even if the Rays don’t win the World Series, they’ve garnered themselves one of the top World Series moments in recent memory.
The World Series became that much more fun again
Fans also get the excitement of going back to Tropicana Field one more time this season. They can go in with some optimism. There have been two World Series home wins at Tropicana Field. Now, there is hope for a third.
Hey, maybe anything is possible. As Yogi Berra famously said, it ain't over till it's over.
Don’t let the Rays win one, to draw inspiration from Kevin Millar.
If they get this series back to Milwaukee, it gets serious.
You can see where I’m going with this idea. In the back of their minds, they know none of this is actually happening. But it’s better than the funeral atmosphere that came with watching your team get swept the night after they suffered what is still likely a fatal punch to the gut.
At least the vibes are there. The night before, who got the decision during that first World Series win at Tropicana Field, James Shields, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. The night of the actual win, Evan Longoria, who has a legendary walk-off to his name and also played third base during the 2008 World Series run, threw out the first pitch as well.
The Rays just need to keep the vibes high. A lot of alumni are in the building. Let them all toss a ceremonial first pitch, especially the ones who know the feeling of falling short in the World Series.
I know that’s not how it works, but one hit made anything feel like the odds are greater than zero. Many of the former players were traded away and still came back. That’s how much they’d like to see this team win. Take that spirit and run with it.
The best part is that the fans would eat it up. Even if the Rays win, this is the last game at home this season. Might as well do what they can to make it as memorable as they can.
