On September 10th of last season, the Rays and Phillies were playing in an interleague series that had very little at stake. Tampa Bay was an underwhelming 71-74 with little chance to make the postseason. On the other hand, the Phillies held an 87-58 record and a commanding lead atop the NL East. Nothing could go wrong, right?
That couldn't have been more false. Heading into the second game of that series in Philadelphia, the Rays' elite set-up man, Edwin Uceta was on an absolute tear. The 6'0 pitcher had a ridiculous 0.75 ERA before tossing a pitch against the mighty Phillies. However, things would go downhill very quickly.
In the bottom of the 8th inning of a tie game, Uceta entered the game with two runners in scoring position. It was a difficult spot, but they trusted their steady reliever to limit the damage. Although, in a rare occurrence for the 2024 Edwin Uceta, the flood gates opened instead.
The Dominican hurler gave up a single and three extra-base hits, including a home run off of Philadelphia shortstop Trea Turner. It's hard to know the cause, but Uceta plunked veteran outfielder Nick Castellanos after the Phillies poured it on. The 6'3 slugger was visibly upset as he stared down Uceta. Meanwhile, Bryce Harper had to be intercepted by Jose Caballero to avoid an all-out brawl. Regardless, both benches were cleared in a matter of minutes.
Uceta claimed that he didn't purposefully hit Castellanos with the pitch, while the Phillies players were adamant about his intentions. Either way, there may be some awkward tension between the two clubs as they face each other for the first time since the incident.
The Phillies are heading into this series in a unique position. They are currently three games out of the desired first place spot in the NL East division, as the Mets have shown sheer dominance most of the season. Meanwhile, the Rays are also only three games out of first place in a disappointing AL East. Therefore, the stakes of this series are a great deal larger than the year prior. If anything happens that either club doesn't appreciate, don't be shocked if there is a little drama in Tampa, FL.
