Does this show that the Rays are making mistakes in terms of their release of highly regarded prospects or does it rather display the flood of talent that Tampa Bay has obtained throughout their franchise's history? Either way, we see time and time again the Rays' prospects that part ways with their original organization and find success in the big leagues elsewhere. Taj Bradley and Kyle Manzardo are prime examples of this, but a lesser-known former Ray is finding a surprising amount of success for the last place White Sox.
The Rays drafted Tanner Murray in the fourth round of the 2020 MLB draft. The 6'1 middle infielder was promoted to Triple-A by 2023 as he displayed impressive offensive potential and respectable defense. In 2023, Murray hit .286 with six home runs and 34 RBIs between four different teams. The Rays have invited the California native to spring training since 2022, but unfortunately, his prime position was blocked by players like Wander Franco, Taylor Walls, and even Carson Williams.
This circumstance never swayed Tanner Murray as produced his best spring training in 2025, slashing .324/.359/.649 with three homers and eight RBIs in 19 contests. It was certainly one of the better showings from a Rays' infielder that spring, but the front office had their minds made up on who would be employed at the middle infield positions. There just wasn't a path to major league playing time for the 26-year-old shortstop.
However, the Rays traded their unlucky prospect to the White Sox in a deal that also involved the acquisitions of relievers Steven Wilson and Yoendrys Gomez. Murray began his White Sox with an uneventful spring training, but he made the roster, nonetheless.
In his first eight games as a major league athlete, the UC Davis alumni has produced a solid .263 AVG with a homer and only three strikeouts in 19 at-bats. His highlight so far in his rookie year must be his first career home run off of Noah Cameron that ended up being the difference maker in a 6-5 White Sox victory. No one from the Rays' perspective is surprised with this early success and we wish the best for Tampa Bay's former top prospect.
