The Rays' defensive wizard finished the 2025 season with a left groin strain causing him to appear in only 101 games. They called up their top prospect for his long-awaited debut at the age of 22, but he didn't quite live up to the hype with a frustrating .172 AVG in 32 contests. Now, with Walls still recovering from his nagging injury, Williams could be the next man up for the job. However, it's an important role for the youngster, so the real question is: Will he be prepared for the task?
Earlier this week, Carson Williams was sent down to the minors along with another talented prospect. The plan all along was for Taylor Walls to begin the season as the Rays' starting shortstop due to his experience and impressive defensive skills. Although, Walls is still having difficulties with his injury recovery. Kevin Cash and the Rays are playing it safe with their coveted infielder, especially after he suffered from an ailment that required hip surgery in 2024.
The obvious option to replace Taylor Walls is the backup shortstop Carson Williams, but there is also a utility option in Ben Williamson that could be a temporary fix. A regular shortstop will be essential to have on the roster though, and Williams is currently "that guy". Rays' beat writer Adam Berry hints at the possibility of the front office adding an external option at the buzzer, but becomes more and more unlikely as Opening Day approaches.
Williams' skill set is similar to Walls in that he's a superior defender, but the potential of his bat was not fulfilled in his tiny 2025 sample size. Giving up on the top prospect is probably not very smart as his ceiling is still exceptionally high. In five minor league campaigns, the 2021 first round pick hit 85 home runs and drove in 283 teammates. His Triple-A stats a season ago displayed a faulty batting average, but the young middle infielder crushed 23 homers, proving that he could have a recipe for success in the MLB. In 99 at-bats for the Rays last year, the 22-year-old hit five home runs and played respectable defense. Is this promising prospect the answer at shortstop?
