The Rays acquired their second baseman of the future in a 3-team trade that sent beloved outfielder Josh Lowe to the Angels. This was a thrilling acquisition as there was a gaping hole at the middle infield position after Brandon Lowe was dealt to the Pirates in another 3-team deal. However, Rays fans have probably been wondering why their new addition hasn't been in the lineup all spring.
Rays' Gavin Lux finally joins lineup after dealing with upper body soreness
Gavin Lux has been left out of the lineup for all of spring training until now as he recovers from a minor ailment. The 5'11 infielder suffered from upper body soreness to begin camp, so he was sidelined as a precautionary measure. Spring training is a time for development and preparation for the season, so it doesn't make sense to push any players who are dealing with any type of injury. Therefore, the excitement around this March 10th game was probably a little different than in years past.
According to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, Gavin Lux "felt like an actual baseball player again" in his return to play. The versatile infielder impressed in his first cup of coffee since his postseason series with the Reds. In his three at-bats, Lux made contact each time as he flew out, singled in the third inning, and lined out. This is definitely reassuring for a player that has been left out of in-game play for so long.
Lux also received some opportunities in the field including starting an inning-ending double play in the 4th inning. He was especially excited to join the Rays because the front office saw him as their everyday second baseman. Lux wasn't in this particular role since his 2024 season with the Dodgers. Last season in Cincinnati, the Wisconsin native was placed all around the field as he primarily played left field if he wasn't the designated hitter. Lux only made 17 appearances at his favorite position, so to receive this trust from the Rays early on must feel great. A solidified infield with consistency will certainly enhance the chemistry and overall vibes of the clubhouse.
