As we approach Opening Day in about two weeks, we're starting to see some stirring from the Rays front office. Multiple players have already been sent to minor league camp in hopes that they'll get a head start in their 2026 home stadium. There are also some updates available for the few injuries that have occurred during camp this spring.
Edwin Uceta injury update
Uceta's injury timeline was mostly precautionary as the Dominican reliever was set to join his home country's team as they seek another World Baseball Classic championship. The 28-year-old was noticeably disappointed for missing this electric tournament with a one-of-a-kind team, but he expressed the necessity of ensuring that he'll be ready for Opening Day. His minor injury was soreness on his throwing arm's shoulder. However, he seems to be progressing well and throwing since late February. Opening Day is a reasonable return for the Rays 2026 closer.
Other Rays injuries
Steven Wilson, a reliever acquired by the Rays in a trade that also included Everson Pereira and prospect Tanner Murray, will likely miss a big chunk of the season with back soreness. The Colorado native hasn't been able to take the mound for the Rays this spring which would further delay his arrival to the bullpen. This is a bigger loss than fans think as the former White Sox hurler broke out with a career-high 1.9 WAR in 55 innings of work.
Manuel Rodriguez was placed on the 60-day injured list and has an expected mid-season return as he continues his recovery from elbow surgery. His presence will also be greatly missed as he's produced a 2.12 ERA over his two seasons in Tampa Bay. The Rays have gotten lucky as the rest of the injuries are very minor with Yandy Diaz suffering from left hand soreness and Richie Palacios experiencing some lower back tightness. Both players will likely make swift returns to the field.
Roster moves
Since March 5th, the Rays have sent 15 players to minor league camp to allow them to prepare for their upcoming season. The most notable exits are relievers Joe Rock and Jesse Scholtens. Both of these pitchers certainly had an opportunity to crack this roster especially with the competition in this Rays bullpen. Rock's departure is particularly surprising as Garrett Cleavinger serves as the only firm left-handed option out of the bullpen this season. Ian Seymour and Cam Booser are other possible lefties that could be added to the Opening Day roster.
Infielder Jadher Areinamo was another surprising move as he was placed on the active roster at the beginning of the offseason. However, the 22-year-old only received one spring at-bat and will prepare for his season with the Montgomery Biscuits. Areinamo joined the Rays in the trade that sent Danny Jansen to the Brewers last season.
