The Rays struck a last-minute deal with the Athletics to acquire a 26-year-old minor league infielder. Unfortunately, middle infield depth is essential at the moment after losing Gold Glove caliber shortstop Taylor Walls and former Dodgers second baseman Gavin Lux to injury. Top prospect Carson Williams can fill in for Walls immediately, but there are plenty of question marks moving forward up the middle. Hopefully, Walls and Lux are only out temporarily, but in the meantime, the front office needed a cushion to fall back on.

Rays acquire infielder Cooper Bowman from the Athletics for pitching prospect Gerlin Rosario

Cooper Bowman was drafted by the Yankees in the fourth round of the 2021 MLB draft out of the University of Louisville. Louisville is known for their respectable baseball program and Bowman excelled there as a 21-year-old. He posted a .293 AVG with eight home runs and 22 RBIs in 48 contests. The Yankees were pleased to select the 6'1 athlete.

However, injuries and inconsistencies have plagued his minor league career to this point. As a member of the New York organization, Bowman hit .237 for the Single-A Tampa Tarpons. These disappointing numbers hurt the chemistry between the South Dakota native and the Yankees.

In 2022, Cooper Bowman was part of the trade that sent high-powered starter Frankie Montas to the Yankees. This was where injuries haunted his young career. With the Athletics, the middle infielder suffered from five injuries, leading to an overall decline in his performance.

Nevertheless, Bowman had a respectable 2025 campaign as he hit .234 across three minor league clubs. He played most of the season with Triple-A Las Vegas, homering six times and driving in 41 teammates. His ascent to the major leagues should come rather soon if he continues to excel and avoid the IL.

As it stands, Bowman will likely be the instant replacement for Carson Williams in Triple-A Durham. Pending any other injuries to key infielders, that's probably where he will remain for the entirety of the season as he polishes his skills for a possible 2027 call-up. Welcome to the organization, Cooper Bowman!
