This former Rays infielder was highly regarded among the young players within the Rays organization and seemed to be a great fit. During the spring training of 2025, the right-handed slugger hit an astounding .524 in 16 games. He appeared to be a lock for one of the utility roles on the roster as Junior Caminero had a clear path to third base. Only a few months into the season, he was dealt to the White Sox for starting pitcher Adrian Houser.

In 2024, Curtis Mead was considered the No. 3 prospect in the Rays organization and appeared to be a part of the club's future. However, after his great spring training performance, the Australian athlete hit a sub-par .226 with only three home runs before heading to the AL Central club. As a member of the White Sox, Mead didn't perform much better as he posted a .280 OBP in 41 contests.

The 25-year-old infielder will likely start the year on Chicago's roster, but for now, his focus is on representing his country in the World Baseball Classic. As a resident of Australia, it was an easy decision for Mead to play for his home country. Curtis Mead joined highly touted Guardians prospect Travis Bazzana as the only two MLB players on the roster.

In game one against Chinese Taipei, Mead and Bazzana contributed to a 3-0 victory. Both major leaguers collected two hits apiece and the future Guardians infielder launched his first WBC homer. In the second game of the classic against the Czech Republic, Curtis Mead provided the game-deciding hit with a no-doubt 3-run home run in the 3rd inning.

The former Ray is currently leading the Australian lineup with a .500 AVG as they begin this World Baseball Classic with a 2-0 record. They have faced the weaker teams in their group so far, but coming out victorious in both games was essential. Team Australia will take on the all-powerful Japanese team on Sunday as they look to sneak into the playoffs. Japan defeated Chinese Taipei in a 13-0 rout, so this will clearly be no small task. However, two teams can make it out of each group, so Australia is still in control of their destiny.
